The end of a relationship is supposed to be a definite parting of the ways, if both parties are serious about ending it. It’s natural for feelings to linger after it’s over, and a certain air of nostalgia will always be associated with the other person. Yet it’s often the case that one or the other wasn’t ready to let go, and there are ways to tell if the ex-boyfriend is still in love with you.
The first few weeks or so will no doubt be uneventful. The hurt that comes from a break-up naturally causes a person to want to stay as far away from the source of that pain as possible. Eventually, however, you will begin to get signals that he wants to keep seeing you. This may be in the form of phone calls, emails, text messages, and the like. They may even be spiteful in nature. Unless you still have his mother’s wedding ring or his favorite Lakers poster, he really has no need to contact you. This is a sign of interest.
He may show up where you do, unannounced and unexpected. This will even happen when you date someone new. How would he know what you’re doing? Good question. He’s using his contacts - mutual friends, your family, etc. - to keep tabs on you. Unless he’s a closet stalker (which you would know by now) you can be sure that he’s still in love with you.
After a few months, you will start getting more contact from him. You may even get firm with him and try to lay down some boundaries. It won’t matter to him. He will feel that he has “all-access” to you because of your history together. He’ll come to your home, your workplace, even your family’s home when you’re there. Regardless of his demeanor, whether he’s defensive or stubborn or pleading, this is a sure sign that he’s still very much in love.
Do you feel helpless when it comes to relationship break ups? Do you wish there was someone you could turn to for help and advice? At times of despair and sorrow we really need to consult with someone who has experience in this area.
